TRACING HISTORY: FROM CORTINA TO DOBBIACO BY MOUNTAIN BIKE

There are routes that are not simply sporting itineraries, but genuine journeys through time. The Ciclabile delle Dolomiti (the celebrated Cortina-Dobbiaco cycle path) follows the route of the old railway line inaugurated during the Great War. Cycling here means passing through tunnels carved into the rock, bridges suspended over deep gorges, and skirting the old, characteristic railway stations converted into charming refreshment stops.

  • Distance: approximately 60 km (round trip)
  • Riding time: 4 to 6 hours
  • Surface: Compact, even, well-maintained gravel (ideal for MTB, E-Bike, or Gravel)

The Itinerary: Between Alpine Lakes and the Tre Cime

1. Departure from Cortina toward the Pass

You set off directly from the heart of Cortina d’Ampezzo heading north. Past the locality of Fiames, the route begins to climb gently through the woods of the Natural Park. Enjoy the steady pedal that will lead you up to Passo Cimabanche (1,530 m), the geographical pass that separates the Ampezzo valley from Val Pusteria.

2. The Splendor of Landro and the Tre Cime

Beginning the descent toward the South Tyrolean side, you pass through the locality of Carbonin and skirt the magnificent Lago di Landro. Pause for a moment: from here opens the historic “Belvedere,” the only point along the cycle path from which you can admire the majestic north face of the Tre Cime di Lavaredo.

3. Lago di Dobbiaco and Arrival in Town

Continuing the descent, the route passes the poignant military cemetery from the Great War and skirts the emerald waters of Lago di Dobbiaco, an oasis of peace perfect for lunch or a snack. From here, the final flat kilometers will bring you to the center of Dobbiaco.

Choose How to Return: In the Saddle or by Bus

For the return to Cortina there are two options:

  • For the fittest: You can retrace the itinerary in reverse, tackling the steady climb (though never prohibitive) that leads from Dobbiaco back to Passo Cimabanche, then enjoying the very long final descent to the hotel.
  • For those who prefer to relax: If you want to enjoy the one-way ride without hurry, during the summer season the highly convenient Bike Bus service (Line 445 Suedtirolmobil) is available, allowing you to load your bicycle and return to Cortina in complete comfort. (All information and schedules can be found on the official website suedtirolmobil.info).

Hotel Ambra Cortina’s Recommendation

The Cortina-Dobbiaco is a fantastic route, but the distance makes itself felt. Tackling it with an E-Bike will allow you to enjoy the day, the lakes, and the photo stops without worrying about the effort of the return.

Thanks to our partnership with Snow Service, you can book your bike (MTB or E-MTB) and helmet directly on their summer booking portal.
