TO PRATO PIAZZA BY MOUNTAIN BIKE

If you’re looking for a two-wheeled experience that combines the silence of the woods with one of the most spectacular panoramic terraces in the Dolomites, the excursion to Prato Piazza is the perfect choice. This splendid high-altitude plateau, located at over 2,000 meters above sea level, will welcome you with its boundless pastures.

Total distance: approximately 17 km (round trip)

  • Duration: approximately 3 hours
  • Elevation gain: 850 m
  • Type: Mountain Bike / E-Bike (recommended to enjoy the climb in total relaxation)

The Route: From the Woods of Carbonin to the Plateau

1. The steady climb through the woods

The adventure begins in the nearby village of Carbonin. From here, take the forest road along the CAI 37 trail. The climb develops through a series of wide switchbacks immersed in a dense forest of firs and larches: the environment is fresh, shaded and peaceful, ideal for setting a steady pedaling rhythm and enjoying the scent of nature.

2. Opening onto the Prato Piazza plateau

As the kilometers pass and the altitude increases, the forest begins to thin out until it suddenly opens up. The landscape changes in an instant: before you, the immense green meadows of the plateau will unfold, dominated by the imposing profile of Picco di Vallandro and Croda Rossa.

3. Gourmet stops at high altitude

Crossing this high-altitude paradise, the road will lead you first to the characteristic Malga Prato Piazza and immediately after to Rifugio Prato Piazza, the perfect place for a refreshing stop featuring typical Ampezzo and Tyrolean dishes.

Before beginning the descent, we recommend a very short and easy detour to the historic Rifugio Vallandro, an extraordinary panoramic balcony that also contains the remains of an ancient Austro-Hungarian fort.

4. The Return

After recharging your energy, the return follows the same route as the outward journey. A fun and pleasant descent awaits you that will quickly bring you back to the starting point in Carbonin.

Ambra Cortina recommends:

The 850 meters of elevation gain present a constant and never prohibitive gradient, but to experience this day with maximum comfort and without the burden of fatigue, we recommend tackling it on an E-Bike (electric mountain bike).
