FROM MORTISA TO LAKE AJAL: THE ENCHANTMENT OF WATER AND THE TRANQUILITY OF AMPEZZO’S FORESTS

If you desire a rejuvenating excursion that combines the tranquility of a centuries-old forest, the magic of alpine lakes, and an open view of the Dolomites, this loop itinerary is the perfect choice. Starting from the charming hamlet of Mortisa, we will guide you to discover Lake Ajal and Lake Pianòzes, two small jewels set in the greenery, before returning along the historic and panoramic Strada del Convento.

A breathtaking route, ideal for a half-day dedicated to wellness and nature.

Experience Overview

  • Trails: CAI 428 and CAI 430
  • Distance: Approximately 7.5 km (loop route)
  • Duration: Approximately 3 hours of leisurely walking

The Itinerary: Between enchanted forests and alpine lakes

  • Departure from Mortisa: The excursion begins from the last houses of the charming village of Mortisa. Heading south, a pleasant path will initially guide you through grassy meadows extraordinarily rich in alpine flora, before entering the cool embrace of the forest.
  • Toward the heart of the forest: Along the way, you will pass the junction leading to the Volpera Caves (continue straight). Continuing upward, you will reach an important crossroads. From here, take trail CAI 430 on the right: after crossing a small bridge, a steady ascent will lead you to 1,412 meters at Lake Ajal. The Atmosphere of Ajal: This splendid alpine lake, with its historic restaurant, is the ideal place for a rejuvenating stop, lulled by the rustling of trees and the green reflections of the water.

The Return: Between alpine lakes and the historic “Strada del Convento”

  • The descent toward Pianòzes and Campo di Sotto: Leaving Lake Ajal, trail 430 transforms into a comfortable descending dirt road. At the end of the slope, we recommend a small detour to admire the renowned Lake Pianòzes, before continuing on the paved road toward the hamlet of Campo di Sotto.
  • The panoramic return: After the descent, turn right and then immediately left following the signs for Cortina. Just before the campsites, turn left again toward the last houses of the hamlet.
  • Strada del Convento (Former Polveriera): Here the pavement ends and a charming dirt path begins. After an initially steeper section that crosses a small bridge, the road becomes gently level.

The Grand Finale

The final stretch of Strada del Convento will offer you an unforgettable return: you will walk immersed in wide green meadows, with your gaze free to sweep across a spectacular 360-degree panoramic view of the Ampezzo Dolomites, illuminated by the colors of the sun.

After a day spent among the forests and lakeshores, Hotel Ambra Cortina welcomes you back: the tailored comfort of our rooms and a glass of local wine will be the perfect prelude to an evening in the cosmopolitan heart of Cortina.
