EXPLORING THE HEART OF THE DOLOMITES: THE FANES-SENNES-BRAIES PARK

Nestled among the most spectacular peaks of Ampezzo, the Fanes-Sennes-Braies Nature Park offers postcard-perfect scenery, alpine lakes, and high-altitude plateaus mirrored in the sky. A flexible and modular excursion, it is suitable both for those seeking a rejuvenating walk of a few hours and for hikers wishing to experience a full day at high altitude.

  • Duration: From 2 to 8 hours (modular itinerary)
  • Length: from 2 to 21 km
  • Difficulty: Moderate (with some steeper ascents)
  • Recommended equipment: Hiking shoes and poles.

The Starting Point: Malga Ra Stua (1,668 m)

The adventure begins at Malga Ra Stua. To reach it, you have two options:

  • By car or shuttle: Ra Stua can be reached by car during the months with lower visitor numbers. From early July to early September, the road is closed to traffic and a convenient continuous shuttle service is active (08:30 AM – 7:00 PM, no reservation required) departing from Loc. Fiames, at the Park information office. (Note: for up-to-date schedules, we recommend consulting the official Park website https://www.dolomitiparco.com/).
  • On foot: For the more active, you can start from the Sant’Uberto parking area by taking the CAI trail no. 6. A pleasant dirt road that runs alongside the stream, immersed in the scent of fir and larch trees.

The Itinerary: Through Pastures, Rifugi, and Breathtaking Views

From Malga Ra Stua, follow trail no. 6 towards Ciampo de Cróš. From this strategic crossroads, you can customize your path:

  1. Towards Rifugio Fodara Vedla (1,980 m): Turn onto CAI trails no. 7 and 9. You will find yourself walking through lush green pastures and wide panoramic views of the Dolomites.
  2. The Lake and Rifugio Sennes (2,126 m): Continuing from Fodara on trail 7, the landscape becomes even more open and spectacular, until you reach the evocative Lake Sennes. The fast alternative: If you wish to head directly to Rifugio Sennes from Malga Ra Stua, simply stay on trail no. 6 at Ciampo de Cróš without deviating.
  3. The highest destination: Rifugio Biella (2,327 m): From Sennes, the CAI trail no. 6A will guide you through a fascinating karst plateau. After one last steeper ascent, you will be rewarded with an exceptional view at the foot of the majestic Croda del Becco.

The Return: Discovering the Fòses Lakes

To return to Malga Ra Stua, you can retrace your steps or choose an alternative loop: trail no. 26 Fòses. This route will cradle you among high-altitude meadows and small bodies of water before descending (with a steeper gradient, in about 1.5 to 2 hours) back towards the Ciampo de Cróš junction and, finally, to Ra Stua.
