Via XXIX Maggio, 28 – 32043 Cortina d’Ampezzo (BL)
This is the convenient access from Cortina to the splendid Fanes Valley, in a setting that combines the enchanting green of the woods with the vertiginous south wall of Taè and the beautiful limestone of Col Bechei. But above all, it is an excursion through the tumultuous waters of the Fanes stream and its splendid waterfalls. The passage under the first Fanes Waterfall and the crossing of the vertiginous Ponte Alto are literally unique and unmissable.
The short equipped sections present no particular difficulties and overall the excursion can be completed in half a day.
From the SS 51 state road heading north, after passing the Fiames hotel, take the paved road on the left that runs alongside the Boite river and is marked “Valle di Fanes”. From the parking area, pass the barrier and continue on foot following trail markers 10-401, which for the first section consists of a former paved military road.
From Pian del Loa, enter the woods along the path that, following the left side of the Rio Fanes stream, arrives after approximately 1 hour at the edge of the deep gorge carved by the stream. From here, descend along the small path that leads to the rocky streambed. Keeping to the left bank, ascend the stream and then overcome rocky steps with ladders. You will thus reach a narrow passage between the rocks that leads to the passage under the first waterfall, emerging on the opposite side at a rest point.
1st – From the rest point: following the dirt road, cross Ponte Outo (bridge 80m high above the stream gorge) and return to the parking area via the dirt road.
2nd – You can complete the full waterfall circuit by taking the equipped path with fixed ropes that intersects 250m downstream from the rest point and leads back to the riverbed. Then ascend from where you descended.
Notes
A distinctive and easy loop trail, well equipped. Appreciated for the journey it offers through the tumultuous waters and waterfalls of the Rio Fanes. Unique and unmissable passage under the waterfall and the vertiginous crossing of Ponte Outo.
